Why In News:

The government informed Parliament that India curtailed 8,133 GWh of solar power during April to June 2026, as the electricity grid struggled to absorb surplus renewable generation amid transmission bottlenecks.

Recent Solar Power Curtailment

Curtailment refers to the deliberate reduction of power output from a generating source, usually to maintain grid stability and security, even though the source is capable of producing more.

The government attributed curtailment to a mismatch between the commissioning of transmission lines and renewable energy (RE) projects, meaning solar capacity is being added faster than the grid's evacuation infrastructure.

Solar power's intermittent nature (zero generation at night, variable output through the day) makes grid balancing more complex compared to conventional baseload sources like coal or nuclear.

Solar Power Development in India

India’s solar power sector has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, with installed capacity rising from about 3 GW in 2014 to nearly 135 GW by 2025.

India ranks third globally in both solar power capacity and total renewable energy installed capacity, and is emerging as the second-largest solar growth market.

This expansion includes a diverse mix of ground-mounted solar projects, rooftop installations, hybrid systems, and off-grid solutions, making solar energy a key component of India’s overall energy mix.

It also plays a crucial role in advancing the country’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Solar power deployment is largely concentrated in the western and northern regions of India, where high solar irradiation and the availability of vast land areas provide favourable conditions.

States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are leading contributors, with Rajasthan emerging as a frontrunner due to its immense solar potential and ambitious expansion plans.

Key Facts for Prelims

The Grid Controller of India Limited (Grid-India), formerly POSOCO, is the central agency responsible for real-time grid operations and reporting curtailment data.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and pumped hydro storage are being promoted as solutions to store surplus daytime solar generation for evening peak demand, reducing the need for curtailment.

The government has also mandated the use of domestically manufactured solar cells (from an approved list of manufacturers) in clean energy projects from June 2026, to reduce import dependence on China.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is the nodal ministry overseeing India's solar and wind capacity addition and associated grid integration challenges.
