Why In News:
The Ministry of Rural Development approved road works worth Rs. 211.71 crore in Tripura under PMGSY-IV (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana - Phase IV).
About PMGSY
Launched: 25 December 2000 by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme.
Objective: Provide all-weather road connectivity to eligible unconnected rural habitations.
Ministry: Ministry of Rural Development is the nodal ministry.
Funding pattern: The fund sharing pattern of PMGSY is 60:40 between the Centre and States for all states except for North Eastern and Himalayan States. For these states the fund sharing pattern is 90:10.
Phases of PMGSY
PMGSY-I (2000): Focus on new connectivity to unconnected habitations.
PMGSY-II (2013): Upgradation of existing rural roads.
PMGSY-III (2019): Consolidation of Through Routes and Major Rural Links connecting habitations to Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAM), Higher Secondary Schools, and Hospitals.
PMGSY-IV (2024 onwards): Focus on climate-resilient rural roads, addressing challenges of extreme weather events, with improved material specifications for durability.
Key Facts for Prelims
PMGSY roads are governed by the OMMAS (Online Management, Monitoring, and Accounting System) for real-time tracking.
NABARD: Provides financing for PMGSY (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) through RIDF (Rural Infrastructure Development Fund).
Population threshold: Plain areas: habitations of 500+ persons; Hilly/tribal/desert/LWE areas: 250+ persons are eligible for connectivity under PMGSY.
