National Beekeeping and Honey Mission: India's Sweet Revolution (Economy)

It was recently argued in the news that India's Sweet Revolution in honey and beekeeping output can only be sustained if pollinator bee populations and their habitats are protected from pesticide overuse and climate stress.

What is the Sweet Revolution?
The Sweet Revolution refers to the Government’s initiative to promote scientific beekeeping (apiculture) as a source of rural employment, income diversification and agricultural productivity.
National Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM): It is the key programme under the Sweet Revolution, implemented by the National Bee Board (NBB) with a total outlay of ₹500 crore for FY 2020-21 to 2025-26.
Three Mini Missions: NBHM focuses on productivity improvement through pollination, post-harvest management and marketing, and research, technology and innovation in beekeeping.
Beyond Honey: The initiative promotes production of high-value products such as beeswax, bee pollen, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom, creating additional livelihood opportunities.
Infrastructure & Quality: NBHM supports honey-processing units, cold storage, collection and marketing centres, beekeeping equipment units and honey-testing laboratories to improve quality and value addition.
Honey Corridors: The mission promotes the development of Honey Corridors in suitable areas to facilitate organised beekeeping and improve production.
Why Bees Matter
Bees are critical pollinators for a large share of fruit, vegetable and oilseed crops, directly influencing agricultural productivity and food security.
Global pollinator decline, linked to pesticide use, habitat loss and climate change, threatens crop yields worldwide.
Beekeeping provides supplementary income to small and marginal farmers with minimal land requirement.
Sustainability Concerns Raised
Overuse of chemical pesticides, especially neonicotinoids, in intensive farming zones is blamed for colony collapse and reduced honeybee populations.
Loss of natural forage such as wildflower meadows and forest patches due to monoculture cropping reduces nectar availability for bees.
Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall affect flowering cycles, disrupting the beekeeping calendar.
Key Facts for Prelims
India has multiple native honeybee species including Apis cerana indica, Apis dorsata (rock bee) and Apis florea (dwarf bee), besides the introduced European bee Apis mellifera.
FSSAI and BIS jointly regulate honey quality standards in India.
Beekeeping support is also delivered through Integrated Beekeeping Development Centres (IBDCs) for training and extension.
