Kargil Vijay Diwas

Observed annually on 26 July in India, this day marks India’s victory in the Kargil War and honours the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.

Significance: The 1999 conflict is regarded as the first major military confrontation between two nuclear-armed neighbours in South Asia.

Background:

India and Pakistan have had a long history of conflict, including the 1971 war.

Even after 1971, tensions continued, especially over areas like the Siachen Glacier.

In 1998, both countries conducted nuclear tests, which increased tensions in the region.

The Lahore Declaration was signed to promote peaceful resolution of disputes, including Kashmir.

During the winter of 1998–99, Pakistani forces secretly crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and occupied key mountain positions in Kargil (Ladakh).

India responded with Operation Vijay, deploying over 200,000 troops to take back the occupied areas.

Indian forces successfully recaptured key positions like Tiger Hill and Point 4875, which was later renamed Batra Top in honour of Captain Vikram Batra.
