Private Space-tech Sector
India's private space-tech sector raised $200 million across 53 funding rounds in 2025, up sharply from just $43 million across 12 rounds in 2021.
Bengaluru leads India's space-tech funding landscape, attracting $495 million across 106 rounds, followed by Hyderabad ($205 million) and Chennai ($80 million).
The growth follows policy reforms that opened India's space sector to private participation, notably the Indian Space Policy, 2023 and the creation of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) as the single-window regulator for private players.
Key Facts for Prelims
The Indian Space Policy 2023: provides a comprehensive framework that clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders within India’s space sector.
The policy is designed to bring greater clarity to ongoing space reforms and to promote increased participation from the private sector in the space economy.
It seeks to encourage and institutionalise the involvement of private players, while repositioning ISRO to concentrate primarily on research and development of advanced space technologies.
IN-SPACe: The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) is an independent, single-window nodal agency functioning as an autonomous body under the Department of Space (DoS).
It was established as part of India’s space sector reforms with the objective of encouraging and facilitating greater participation of private players in space activities.
IN-SPACe is mandated to promote, enable, authorise, and supervise space-related activities undertaken by non-governmental entities (NGEs).
Catalysing Private Investment IN-SPACe Initiatives
IN-SPACe Seed Fund Scheme: Provides early-stage financial support (up to ₹1 crore) to space startups and MSMEs for developing innovative space technologies, along with mentorship, training, and networking.
1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund: Aims to boost private participation by offering early-stage capital to space startups, attracting investments, and expanding India’s space economy five-fold over the next decade (FY 2025–30).
500 crore Technology Adoption Fund (TAF): Supports the commercialisation of indigenous space technologies, providing up to 60% funding for startups/MSMEs and 40% for large industries, with a maximum limit of 25 crore per project.
