India's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train (Science and Technology)
Why In News:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India's first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train from Jind in Haryana. The train carries around 2,600 passengers and emits only water vapour, with no tailpipe emissions, marking a major milestone in India's green mobility transition.
The rake has been retrofitted with hydrogen leak detectors, automatic shutdown systems, and real-time monitoring to ensure safety, since hydrogen is a highly flammable gas requiring stringent handling protocols.

How Does a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train Work?
Working principle: Hydrogen stored in the train's cylinders combines with oxygen from the surrounding air inside the fuel cell, producing electricity that powers the traction motors and turns the wheels, with water vapour and heat as the only by-products.
Hydrogen + Oxygen → Electricity + Water Vapour → The Train Moves
Suitability: The technology is especially suited for non-electrified railway routes, where laying overhead electric traction is not cost-effective, such as hilly, heritage, or low-traffic branch lines.
Significance: Low noise, high efficiency, zero direct carbon emissions, and reduced dependence on diesel, which currently powers a significant share of India's non-electrified rail network.
Policy Backdrop
National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM): it was launched in January 2023 to promote clean energy transition.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is responsible for its implementation, with a target of achieving a production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030.
Under the mission, the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme offers financial incentives for electrolyser manufacturing as well as the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia.
Green Hydrogen Hubs: Under the mission, select states and regions will be developed as Green Hydrogen Hubs to promote large-scale production, storage, and utilization of green hydrogen.
Additionally, the government has issued scheme guidelines to promote the use of green hydrogen in key sectors such as steel, transport, and shipping.
The hydrogen train initiative directly supports the NGHM's mobility vertical, alongside pilots for hydrogen fuel cell buses and trucks being tested by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and NTPC.
Indian Railways' Net Zero Carbon Emitter target: Indian Railways has committed to becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030, and hydrogen trains form one pillar of this strategy alongside 100% electrification and solar rooftop deployment on stations.
