Why In News:

Mathematician Hong Wang was among four recipients of the 2026 Fields Medal, announced at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, becoming only the third woman to win the award in its 90 year history.

About the Fields Medal

Prestige: Widely regarded as the highest honour in mathematics, though it is not a Nobel Prize.

Awarding body: Awarded once every four years by the International Mathematical Union at the International Congress of Mathematicians.

IMU is an international non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization.

The purpose of IMU is to promote international cooperation in mathematics.

Eligibility: Restricted to mathematicians under the age of 40 at the time of the award.

Origin: Instituted in 1936, named after Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields.

Key Facts for Prelims

India and the ICM: India hosted the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2010 in Hyderabad.

Related national award: The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize recognises outstanding Indian research in science, including mathematics.

Among the more than 60 mathematicians who have received the Fields Medal since 1936, only two are of Indian origin.

These are Akshay Venkatesh of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, who was awarded the medal in 2018, and Manjul Bhargava of Princeton University, who received it in 2014.
