Why In News:
The government highlighted the contribution of the BioE3 Policy in promoting biomanufacturing and bio-based products, boosting sustainable industrial growth, and generating green jobs, reinforcing India's bioeconomy and self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) goals.

About the BioE3 Policy
Approval: Approved in 2024; nodal ministry is the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Focus sectors: Bio-based chemicals and polymers, functional foods, precision biotherapeutics, climate-resilient agriculture, carbon capture and utilisation, and marine and space biotechnology.
Mechanism: Promotes biomanufacturing hubs and bio-clusters to translate research into commercial-scale, high-performance manufacturing.
Objectives
Economic growth: Strengthen India's position in the global bioeconomy through innovation-led, bio-based industrial growth.
Environmental sustainability: Encourage bio-based alternatives to petrochemical products, cutting the carbon footprint of manufacturing.
Employment: Create green jobs and support start-ups in biomanufacturing and biotechnology-based enterprises.
Key Facts for Prelims
National Biopharma Mission: It is a collaborative initiative between industry and academia aimed at accelerating biopharmaceutical research and development in India, complementary to BioE3.
It was launched in 2017 with a total outlay of ₹1,500 crore, with 50% funding supported by the World Bank loan.
The mission is implemented by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
BIRAC is a Public Sector Enterprise established under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to promote innovation in the biotech sector.
