What is Astrobase's Achievement?
Astrobase Space Technologies, founded in 2024, has unveiled India's first privately developed 800 kN FFSC engine, using LOX (Liquid Oxygen) and Methane (LNG) as propellants.
It is capable of generating around 800 kilonewtons of thrust in space (vacuum conditions).
Full Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) is the most complex rocket engine cycle attempted; only one FFSC engine (SpaceX's Raptor) has ever flown in the history of spaceflight.
In a full-flow engine, both the fuel and oxidiser are partially burned separately in pre-burners, generating hot gases that drive their respective pumps before entering the main combustion chamber.
This approach enables higher efficiency and operation at very high pressure, while also reducing stress on engine components.
ISRO has never attempted an FFSC engine, making Astrobase's project one of the most technically ambitious private space ventures undertaken in India.
Astrobase plans to cluster seven such engines under a partially reusable, medium-lift rocket, targeting an orbital launch by 2029.
